    Today in History: June 27, Hurricane Audrey makes Gulf Coast landfall

    On June 27, 1957, Hurricane Audrey struck the Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm, resulting in as many as 600 deaths. Other historical events include the 1844 deaths of Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith, the 1950 UN Security Council resolution supporting South Korea, the 1967 debut of the first ATM by Barclays Bank, and the 2005 guilty plea of BTK serial killer Dennis Rader.

    The state of the death penalty at the Supreme Court

    The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of three death row inmates, overturning lower court decisions in Whitton v. Dixon, Pitchford v. Cain, and Hamm v. Smith. The rulings highlighted issues with DNA evidence handling, jury selection, and assessing intellectual disability, while states increased executions in 2025, with 47 people put to death. The Court has denied all 2026 execution delay requests but did not halt any executions.
