The rural South, once central to the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) movement, now faces renewed voting rights challenges as the Supreme Court has weakened key VRA protections. Recent decisions like Louisiana v. Callais and Shelby v. Holder have eroded safeguards against racial discrimination in voting, leading to restrictive laws in 29 states and concerns about repeating historical voter suppression.

The U.S. Supreme Court allowed Alabama to use a 2023 congressional map in an August special primary, reversing a lower court’s ruling that found the map racially discriminatory. The 6-3 decision in Allen v. Milligan cited concerns about last-minute changes to election maps, while dissenting justices warned of chaotic consequences. Plaintiffs argued the map violated voting rights protections for Black Alabamians.

The Supreme Court allowed Alabama to use a congressional map favoring Republicans in upcoming elections, blocking a lower court ruling that found the plan discriminated against Black voters. The map creates only one majority-Black district out of seven, with three liberal justices dissenting. The decision impacts special primary elections in August and follows a broader redistricting effort linked to efforts to maintain Republican House majority.

Alabama officials filed an emergency application with the U.S. Supreme Court to block a lower court's order requiring the use of a court-ordered congressional map, arguing their 2023 map is not racially discriminatory. The state seeks to use the 2023 map for the 2026 midterm elections, while the NAACP Legal Defense Fund claims it intentionally denies Black voters fair representation.
