Charlotte City Council is considering a proposal for a 9 p.m. curfew for individuals under 18, which was supported by the majority of councilmembers present. CMPD Chief Estella Patterson stated that the new rule will provide officers with better ways to respond to unauthorized and unruly mass gatherings. However, other councilmembers expressed concern that the curfew might criminalize minors or negatively affect their records.

A vigil was held in Charlotte for Lorenzo Araujo, a man shot and killed by federal agents in Houston during a traffic stop. Immigration officials claim self-defense after Araujo allegedly rammed their vehicle, while three detained men dispute this account. Houston city leaders criticize the lack of information from federal authorities, and the county’s district attorney seeks access to the van involved.

Charlotte will implement a red-light camera pilot program at 10 intersections starting in 2027, following the death of Lance Sotelo, who was struck by a red-light runner at one of these intersections. Jeanne Sotelo, Lance’s mother, supports the initiative as a safety measure and advocates for additional pedestrian protections like raised crosswalks.
