Dallas Crime Coverage and Measured Incidents Diverge Sharply Across National, Local, and Data Sources
Over the 90 days ending 2026-07-04, Dallas recorded 26 homicides, representing well under 1 percent of the 31,226 total measured incidents in the dataset. Theft (6,362 incidents, 20 percent of measured volume) and the broad 'other' category (16,132 incidents, 52 percent) made up the bulk of measured activity. Coverage told a different story: national outlets ran 26 of their 33 Dallas crime stories (79 percent) on homicide, including pieces like WTOP's 'Judges resume sentencing over shooting at Texas immigration facility.' Local outlets, led by KDFW FOX4 Dallas, also skewed toward homicide (6 of 14 stories, 43 percent) with headlines such as 'One man dead following overnight shootout near Deep Ellum,' but at roughly half the intensity of national framing.
The coverage-versus-data gap is stark for high-volume, low-drama categories: theft, drugs, vandalism, burglary, and disorder combined account for roughly 40 percent of measured incidents but drew a single local drug story and zero national stories among the sampled headlines. The 'other' category, the largest measured bucket at 52 percent, appeared in only 2 of 14 local stories (14 percent) and none nationally.
The national-versus-local gap is also visible within violent crime itself: national outlets' homicide share (79 percent of their Dallas stories) nearly doubles local outlets' homicide share (43 percent), even though both draw from the same underlying 26 measured homicides. Assault shows a similar pattern in miniature: it is 4 percent of measured incidents but 21 percent of local stories and 6 percent of national stories, suggesting local coverage leans into violent incidents more than the data volume alone would predict, though less severely than national outlets do for homicide.
Each category’s share of measured incidents, national/cable coverage, and local coverage over the same ~90-day window.
