The Pasadena Police Department issued a safety reminder, asking drivers to prioritize caution in school zones during Back to School Safety Month. This appeal was made as students prepare for the start of the 2026-2027 school year at Pasadena Unified School District on Monday, Aug. 17.

Several new traffic laws are scheduled to take effect across Colorado on August 12, introducing significant changes concerning school zones, speeding penalties, and police procedures for serious crashes. These measures represent a broad effort to improve road safety following the most recent legislative session at the Colorado General Assembly.

Mt. Juliet Police conducted 72 traffic stops in school zones on the first day of classes, resulting in two arrests. One arrest involved a man with a revoked license and outstanding warrant, while the other involved a woman found with methamphetamine. Officers issued 50 warnings and 21 citations, including 15 for cell phone use while driving.

Oʻahu school zone speed limits are being reduced to 20 mph to decrease crashes and protect children returning to school. The measure aims to save lives by slowing traffic in these areas.

The City of Colorado Springs is adding eight new school zones by the end of summer to enhance safety around middle and high schools. The initiative follows the death of Doherty High School student Giorgia Trocciola and includes installing flashing lights to slow traffic. City leaders plan to add ten more zones next year on the northeast side, aiming for safe zones at all schools.

Honolulu reduced school zone speed limits to 20 mph on Oʻahu, but the speed limit signs have not been updated to reflect this change.

Austin ISD delayed a plan to redraw most of the district's zones, which determines which schools students attend, by a year. Some boundary changes will still occur in the 2027-28 school year.
