Vortices

Corals create tiny vortices to absorb oxygen for survival, but this mechanism fails under high temperatures. The survival process involves an invisible, previously unknown dance of activity across their living surfaces.

The southwest monsoon in Kerala, which began strongly, is expected to transition into a sluggish phase. The offshore trough and associated vortices, typically responsible for triggering extremely heavy rainfall, have not yet developed this season.

Japanese scientists from the University of Osaka used supercomputer simulations to uncover how dolphins generate thrust through tail movements and vortices, revealing that large vortex rings contribute to forward motion while smaller vortices do not. The study was published in the journal Physical Review Fluids.
