A Chicago alderman criticized Illinois' no-cash bail law after a violent offender allegedly killed a police officer while on pretrial release. A 27-year-old man, Alphanso Talley, who was free on pretrial release for a separate armed robbery case, allegedly shot and killed a Chicago police officer at Swedish Hospital on Saturday. Talley, who had prior gun-related and robbery convictions, was charged with murder and other offenses after the attack, which prosecutors say was committed during his hospital transport for a CT scan.
