A critically endangered New Zealand parakeet, the kakariki karaka, has seen its population surge due to a breeding pair, Nacho and Trixie, who produced 55 chicks since 2024, contributing over 10% of the species' total population. The pair, housed at the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch, hatched 33 chicks this year alone.
