An Alaska pilot, Ken Jouppi, is challenging a mandatory airplane forfeiture after state troopers found beer in a passenger's luggage during a 2012 flight to a dry village. The Supreme Court agreed to review whether the punishment violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on excessive fines.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving an Alaskan pilot whose 1969 Cessna airplane was seized by the state over a passenger attempting to transport a six-pack of Budweiser into a dry village. The pilot is challenging Alaska's authority to confiscate the plane under these circumstances.
