SpaceX's Starlink is making significant inroads into Africa's digital market, aiming to bridge the continent's digital divide by providing affordable satellite internet. While the technology promises benefits by bypassing expensive fiber-optic infrastructure, African governments face the challenge of balancing internet expansion with protecting local telecom industries and maintaining economic control over their digital infrastructure.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame dismissed US sanctions imposed on Rwanda's military in March, stating they will not change Kigali's position on eastern DR Congo. The US sanctioned Rwanda for allegedly funding M23 rebels and violating a ceasefire, while Rwanda claims its involvement aims to counter the FDLR militia. Kagame asserted that pursuing national interests is worth the cost of international restrictions.

African leaders are demanding that foreign mining companies process minerals domestically rather than export raw materials, leveraging increased global demand for critical metals and geopolitical competition. Nigeria and Gabon have announced specific policies requiring value-added processing, with leaders arguing African nations must stop accepting unfavorable deal terms set outside the continent.
