Bridge demolition between Iowa and Wisconsin means long detours, downtown challenges
The historic Black Hawk Bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Lansing, Iowa, was demolished due to structural deficiencies, including its narrow width of 21 feet. Its replacement is a modernized, wider bridge expected by spring 2027, which will feature a concrete surface and proper shoulder. Until completion, the closure has caused convoluted detours for commuters and negatively impacted local businesses in the historic Main Street district.
