Federal regulators are approving robotaxis to operate without steering wheels and potentially without brake pedals. Amazon's Zoox has received approval to charge customers for rides in autonomous vehicles, pending state and local approvals, and plans to scale production to 10,000 units annually. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also proposed a rule to allow brake-pedal-free robotaxis, while Zoox competes with Waymo in autonomous vehicle development.
