First session of Syria’s parliament convenes after Assad’s ousting

Syria’s transitional parliament held its first session to draft a new constitution and establish democracy after decades of authoritarian rule. The parliament replaced the previous rubber-stamp legislature following Bashar al-Assad’s ousting in December 2024 and adopted a temporary constitutional declaration for a five-year transition period.
