China fires up world’s biggest superconducting magnet for nuclear fusion project

China's CRAFT 'artificial sun' project has activated the world's largest superconducting magnet, consisting of a toroidal-field magnet and central solenoid, passing final tests and surpassing international benchmarks. This achievement by the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, clears a major engineering hurdle for nuclear fusion research.
