Most mass shooters show warning signs before attacks, study finds

A study analyzing 171 U.S. mass public shootings between 1999 and 2024 found that perpetrators often displayed observable warning signs, including violent communications to others, overlapping stressors, and prolonged planning. Nearly 86% of attackers disclosed violent thoughts to at least one person, while most obtained firearms legally and had prior law enforcement contact.
