Most mass shooters show warning signs before attacks, study finds

A study analyzing 171 U.S. mass public shootings between 1999 and 2024 found that perpetrators often displayed observable warning signs, including communicating violent intentions, experiencing multiple stressors, and planning attacks over extended periods. Nearly 86% of perpetrators disclosed violent thoughts to someone in their social circle, but fragmented signals across individuals and systems hindered early intervention.
