A pro-carcinogenic bacterial toxin binds claudin-4 to cleave E-cadherin
A study published in Nature identifies claudin-4 as a receptor for the pro-carcinogenic toxin from Bacteroides fragilis. The toxin's interaction with claudin-4 on colonic epithelial cells leads to E-cadherin cleavage, disrupting epithelial barriers and causing inflammation.
