U.S. overdose deaths fell again in 2025, but some worry about policy and drug supply changes

About 70,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2025, a 14% decrease from the previous year, marking the third straight annual drop. The 2025 total is comparable to the tally in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. This decline is the longest in decades.
