- Two years after ‘red mud’ escaped alumina refinery, LDEQ hasn’t penalized company
Two years after red mud waste from the Atalco Gramercy alumina refinery began escaping into public waterways in Louisiana, the state has not penalized the company, instead engaging in confidential settlement negotiations. Federal courts have paused a citizen lawsuit against Atalco, and recent inspections found ongoing leaks into ditches connected to Lake Maurepas.
- A Brazilian Plant Aims to Turn Mining’s Red Mud Into Green Iron
A semi-industrial plant under construction at Hydro’s Alunorte refinery in Barcaréna, Pará, aims to process 50,000 tonnes of red mud annually into green iron by July 2026. Developer New Wave is investing R$240m ($46m) in the project.
