    UNC Charlotte athletic department on track to receive $5.8M from sports betting taxes

    North Carolina's sports betting tax revenue increased by 23% in fiscal 2026, generating $143 million. The new state budget allocates more funds to university athletic departments, including a $5.8 million cap for UNC-affiliated programs starting 2027-28, and adds UNC Chapel Hill and N.C. State as recipients. Previously, 50% of remaining proceeds went to the general fund, but this will increase to 100% under the updated budget.
