Afghan grape producers in Kandahar are facing severe financial difficulty because fighting between Afghanistan and Pakistan has closed their primary export market. Unable to sell fresh fruit, many farmers have turned to drying grapes into raisins, but decreased demand has caused prices for these goods to crash drastically. Exporters note that the closure of trade routes represents a major blow to the country's agricultural economy.
