Weddell Sea

Frank Hurley, the official photographer on Shackleton's Antarctic expedition, saved 120 glass-plate negatives after the ship Endurance became trapped in ice in 1915. Hurley later smashed 400 negatives to lighten lifeboats, while the crew survived months on ice before being rescued. The Royal Geographical Society has published surviving photos from the expedition.

Researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute discovered an unknown Antarctic island previously marked as a 'danger zone' on maps during an expedition in the Weddell Sea. The island, identified after mistaking it for an iceberg, was mapped using an echo sounder and drone imaging, revealing its dimensions and surrounding uncharted shoals.
