- Washington County bus service looks to turn a corner with switch from beleaguered Green Mountain Transit
Washington County has switched from Green Mountain Transit to Tri-Valley Transit to improve rural public bus service and financial stability. The change aligns with a statewide effort to assign rural transit services to specialized providers, as outlined in Act 148 from the 2024 legislative session.
- VTrans receives over $19 million in federal funds for Route 7 reconstruction
The Vermont Agency of Transportation received $19.7 million in federal BUILD grant funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to reconstruct a 12-mile stretch of Route 7 from Pittsford to Brandon. The project, awarded to Engineer’s Construction, Inc., aims to improve safety and capacity through roadway widening, truck climbing lanes, and other infrastructure upgrades, with construction set to begin in fall 2023 and finish by fall 2028.
- Notch-blocker fines to increase tenfold
Vermont will increase fines for oversized vehicles illegally traveling through Smugglers Notch under a new law, raising penalties from $1,000 to $10,000 and up to $20,000 if traffic is substantially blocked. The law, part of S.326 passed on May 26, aims to reduce incidents of trucks getting stuck in the narrow mountain pass, which previously averaged 8.6 annually but dropped to five in 2021 after safety measures like chicanes were installed.
