Pakistan-origin physician Asif Mahmood has been elected chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a bipartisan federal body that monitors global religious freedom and advises the US government. He was previously appointed to USCIRF by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in 2024 and reappointed in 2026.
