Disagreements are perceived as personal when they challenge a person's beliefs and that belief is seen as incorrect. Research found that people are more disturbed by others’ ideas when those beliefs appear to be based on faulty information, rather than merely being different from their own view. Participants reported feeling more upset and were more likely to avoid or distrust individuals whose views they considered factually wrong.
