- ‘You can replace stuff’: Mother describes escape from Southeast DC apartment blaze
Danielle Mitchell escaped a fire in a Southeast D.C. apartment building on Aug. 4, 2026, with her 71-year-old mother and 12-year-old daughter. Neighbors alerted residents, and firefighters responded to the blaze, which displaced 28 adults, 16 children, four dogs, and three cats. Assistance was provided by agencies including the Red Cross and D.C. Department of Human Services.
