The EU called for stronger borders after nearly 70,000 people entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, resulting in 83 deaths. Italy halted its Schengen open-border agreement, and the Czech prime minister proposed suspending Spain from the passport-free zone. Morocco does not recognize Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta, using the enclave as a migration bargaining chip.
