In the 1870s and 1880s, Pueblo was a major industrial and transportation hub in Colorado and nearly became the state capital. Despite efforts to relocate the capital to Pueblo in 1874 and again in 1881, Denver was chosen due to its larger population, financial backing, and existing infrastructure, with Denver winning 66% of the popular vote in 1881.
