The Northern Territory government has introduced draft youth justice laws that would give police the power to charge, detain and question young people for up to 48 hours without a legal guardian. The proposed amendments have been criticized for potentially funnelling Aboriginal children into prisons. Police will be able to question children without an adult present in certain circumstances.

The Northern Territory government is introducing child protection reforms that critics say will worsen the crisis of First Nations children in care. The reforms include eroding the Aboriginal child placement principle. Advocates have warned that these changes are dangerous and ignorant.
