    Myanmar rebuffs ASEAN call to free Aung San Suu Kyi, questions need for envoy

    Myanmar’s military-backed government rejected ASEAN's renewed call for the unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and dismissed the need for the organization's special envoy. The foreign ministry stated that while sentences were commuted on humanitarian grounds, full release must follow the law. Min Aung Hlaing also dismissed ASEAN's peace plan, saying some member states had discriminated against Myanmar.
