The ocean has absorbed much of climate change's impact, but marine heatwaves have tripled since the early 1990s, causing coral bleaching, kelp forest loss, and ecosystem collapse risks. Karina Von Schuckmann, an IGCC author and Mercator Ocean International adviser, highlights these dangers.
- EU invests in ocean monitoring as US cuts funding
The EU is investing 92 million euros in the OceanEye project to expand ocean monitoring as the Trump administration plans cuts to the U.S. Ocean Observatories Initiative. The EU aims to lead global maritime monitoring by 2035, while the U.S. cuts may reduce its role in the Global Ocean Observing System.
