In Idaho, Malachi died from pneumonia and bleeding lungs in 2023, conditions that were preventable with hospital treatment. His parents belong to the Followers of Christ sect, which rejects medical care based on a literal interpretation of scripture. While other circumstances might be investigated as crimes for child endangerment, state laws currently allow these deaths to occur.
