    The U.S. military has targeted three strategically significant islands controlled by Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy chokepoint. The islands, Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb, were seized by Iran in 1971 and serve as a base for Iran's Revolutionary Guard to monitor and attack shipping.
