Monroe has eased drought restrictions to Stage 1, making water conservation voluntary after recent rain and pumping efforts filled Lake Twitty and nearly filled Lake Lee. The city will continue pumping water from a rock quarry to support Lake Lee, but mandatory restrictions are no longer in place.

A city employee, Terry Faircloth, has been charged with stealing $2,000 worth of lumber from a construction site in Wingate. The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported that Faircloth disabled the property's camera and was identified by a neighbor's photo leading to his arrest.
