- 2 conservative law firms join defense team in Elizabeth school district’s book ban lawsuit
Two conservative law firms, Alliance Defending Freedom and the Heritage Foundation, have joined the defense team in a federal lawsuit against the Elizabeth School District over the removal of 18 books from school libraries. The books, which are primarily by or about LGBTQ people and people of color, were taken off shelves in 2024 amid claims of inappropriate content, and the case is set for a December trial.

Richard Briggs plans to sponsor a bill to revise the Age Appropriate Materials Act after the Pulitzer Prize-winning book 'Roots' was removed from Knox County school libraries. The book was taken off shelves due to a scene depicting the rape of an enslaved woman, and the law currently allows removals based on district committee decisions without public records of complaints. The Knox County School Board urged legislative changes to include elected officials in the review process.
