Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, emphasized accelerating the development of the Northern Metropolis as a strategic initiative to redefine Hong Kong's role in China's innovation ecosystem. The project aims to serve as a growth engine for Hong Kong beyond finance and real estate by fostering innovation.

Hong Kong’s leader John Lee has pledged to expand the proposed university town near the border by tenfold to 1,000 hectares. The plan aligns with Beijing’s endorsement of linking education with industry to boost Hong Kong’s economic and innovation and technology development.

Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, began a two-day visit to Hong Kong focusing on housing, technology, and Northern Metropolis developments. He attended a briefing with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and other officials.

Beijing’s top official for Hong Kong affairs, Xia Baolong, will visit Hong Kong to inspect the Northern Metropolis project and a cross-border technology cooperation platform. The Hong Kong government announced the two-day visit, during which the chief executive will join him.

Beijing's top official on Hong Kong and Macau affairs, Xia Baolong, visited the Hengqin cooperation zone in Zhuhai to promote integration with the 15th five-year plan. This was his third trip to the Greater Bay Area this year, where he toured a university town, research institutes, and innovation and technology companies.
