    Woodward Avenue through the years

Woodward Avenue has historically been a place for work, celebration, and cruising. In 1861, the First Michigan Infantry presented colors at Campus Martius on Woodward Avenue before heading to fight in the Civil War. A month after their arrival in Washington, President Abraham Lincoln reportedly stated, "Thank God for Michigan."
