Electric vehicles (EVs) with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology can send energy back to the grid during peak demand, creating a revenue stream for drivers. A coalition including Eversource, National Grid, and others is launching a V2G pilot in Massachusetts to enhance grid reliability and reduce electricity costs.

Massachusetts utilities earn profits through grid infrastructure rather than electricity sales, which is critical context for evaluating a MIT study arguing rooftop solar raises rates. The study excludes grid costs from utility-scale solar projects, which could distort conclusions used to justify reducing solar credits for homeowners.

Ten Massachusetts communities adopted 'fossil fuel free' policies banning gas hookups in new construction and major renovations. Despite these efforts, utilities Eversource and National Grid spent $100 million upgrading gas infrastructure in nine of these communities since the policies were enacted, primarily to replace leaky pipes under the state's Gas System Enhancement Plan.

Eversource has launched targeted load management pilots in Massachusetts to address specific substations with high solar penetration or summer-peak congestion issues. The programs could expand in the coming years, according to a spokesperson.

A neighborhood-scale geothermal network in Framingham, Massachusetts, operated by Eversource, provides heating and cooling to 140 customers via underground pipes. The system is described as groundbreaking and first-of-its-kind.
