Fairfax County, Virginia, will round cash transaction totals to the nearest nickel due to the U.S. Mint ceasing penny production. The policy, effective July 1, 2027, adjusts amounts ending in specific cents digits up or down by up to 2 cents, impacting in-person cash payments for taxes and fees.

Virginia localities have raised $119 million over five years through a targeted sales tax for school construction and maintenance, with nine localities authorized to levy the tax.
