- Michigan prisons paid millions over inmate deaths, disability discrimination
The Michigan Department of Corrections paid out $7 million in legal judgments and settlements in 2025, which is more than double the prior year's payout. Most payouts stemmed from three cases: a settlement regarding alleged disability discrimination by a former MDOC employee, and two judgments related to stabbings that occurred at Macomb County Correctional Facility resulting in inmate deaths.
