‘A new normal’: Miami faces worsening seaweed problem as piles of algae wash up on beaches

Officials are working to remove thousands of tons of sargassum, a floating brown algae, from Florida’s beaches due to a worsening problem amid the climate crisis. Chris Bumpus, chief of conservation for the Miami-Dade county’s parks, recreation and open spaces department, is responsible for cleaning 17 miles of county beaches. This seaweed issue has been observed on beaches in south Florida, west Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean.
