BrahMos is emerging as India's most sought-after defense export due to its strategic range, which enables coverage of key maritime areas, enhancing Indonesia's capability to secure its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Indonesia has become the third Southeast Asian nation to purchase the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system developed by India and Russia. Analysts suggest the missiles will safeguard Indonesia’s strategic waterways from potential collateral damage in future great-power conflicts. The deal was signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Indonesia.

Russia is promoting a new stealth submarine, the Amur-1650, equipped with vertical launch systems for BrahMos missiles to meet Asian demand. However, sanctions, geopolitical allegiances, and industrial challenges may hinder its export potential.

In May 2025, India launched BrahMos missile strikes against Pakistani air bases, prompting Pakistan to deliberately withhold its own Babur cruise missile to avoid signaling nuclear escalation. The four-day crisis remained contained, highlighting a new logic of limited warfare in South Asia defined by strategic restraint rather than full military response.

Vietnam is reportedly close to signing a deal with India to acquire BrahMos cruise missiles, advanced weapons systems that would strengthen Vietnam's defense capabilities. The agreement represents a significant military partnership between the two nations and reflects Vietnam's strategic defense positioning in the region.
