Tanzania's gold reserves reached $3.8 billion as the Bank of Tanzania accumulated 27.5 tonnes of gold, accounting for over 60% of the country's foreign-exchange reserves. The central bank purchased 28 tonnes of gold over 18 months through mid-2026 as part of a de-dollarization program.

Tanzania's government has abandoned plans to sell gold held by the Bank of Tanzania as part of foreign exchange reserves. Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba stated the decision was made due to declining international gold prices rendering the sale economically unviable.
