Shoppers unexpectedly cut spending in July as the boost from government tax refunds faded, causing retail sales to slip 0.6%. According to data released by the Commerce Department, excluding gas stations and auto dealers, retail sales fell 0.2%, although the lone services category – restaurants – registered a 0.5% increase.
