Maiden, Sword, Ship: Staten Island’s Borough Flag Is Now City-Certified
Staten Island’s long-standing unofficial borough flag—depicting Henry Hudson’s ship, possible oystermen, and a woman with sword and shield—was officially adopted after City Councilmember Frank Morano’s bill passed unanimously. This formal codification makes Staten Island one of three boroughs to have an official borough flag. The new 'allegorical' design was suggested by designer Emil Micha, who collaborated with former Borough President Jimmy Oddo.
