New drug-resistant fungal disease increases among vulnerable patients
Over 3,500 clinical cases of Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus causing severe illness, have been reported as of August 1. Experts express concern because the yeast resists multiple antifungal drugs and is often seen in healthcare facilities among vulnerable patients. The CDC reports that while case numbers fluctuated compared to last year, the organism remains an emerging threat.
