Louisiana lenient on enforcing big truck weight limits, audit finds

A Legislative Auditor's report found that two state agencies enforcing truck size and weight limits have been lax in their enforcement efforts, resulting in more likely worsened highway and bridge conditions. The auditors noted poor coordination between the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and Louisiana State Police (LSP), despite both being authorized for mobile inspections on all state highways. Although DOTD agreed with recommendations, LSP disputed suggestions regarding mandatory collaboration and dismissed using road condition data as primary indicators for enforcement.
