Why Michiganders should check their trees for Asian longhorned beetles in August

Michigan officials are urging the public to check their trees for signs of the invasive Asian longhorned beetle during August, recognized as Tree Check Month. This non-native wood-boring beetle attacks over 12 types of hardwood trees and causes fatal infestations characterized by round exit holes. To prevent spread, the Michigan DNR advises leaving firewood at home or using certified, heat-treated options, and any sightings should be reported to the designated hotline.
