American Airlines is making its best free upgrade harder to get
American Airlines announced that beginning August 25, complimentary upgrades from economy to business class will no longer be provided for elite AAdvantage members on select domestic routes, including transcontinental flights and trips to Hawaii. Instead, eligible travelers will receive an upgrade to premium economy when seats are available. The change is described as a move to protect revenue and streamline the complimentary upgrade process.
