Marijuana use surpasses cigarette smoking in the US, new federal study finds

A 2025 federal study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that marijuana use in the US surpassed cigarette smoking, with 43.8 million users versus 36.1 million. Alcohol remained the most commonly used substance, with 129.1 million monthly users. Marijuana use was highest among adults aged 18-25, while cigarette smoking was more common among older adults.
